Albert Mammarella Obituary

Albert A. “Bat” Mammarella, 96, died Saturday, February 2, 2019. He was the husband of Nicolina B. Moschitta Mammarella, who preceded him in death in 2009, after more than 59 years of marriage. Born in Coatesville, he was the son of the late John and Rose Carlettini Mammarella.

Bat was a 1942 graduate of Scott High School where he was the Captain of the Football Team.  After graduation, he served in the U.S. Navy on an LST during World War II and was part of the forces that liberated France at Normandy on D-Day.  While in the Navy, he also saw action in North Africa, Italy and the Philippines.

He was employed with the former Lukens Steel Company, retiring in 1983 with 42 years of service, working at the Strand Caster in the Electric Furnace area. Bat was also an active member and trustee for the United Steelworkers Local Union 1165.

He was a member of Our Lady of the Rosary Church and the Holy Name Society.  Bat was also a member of the LGM, the United States LST Association, and the Coatesville Sports Hall of Fame. For 30 years after his retirement, he enjoyed friendships and exercise at the YMCA.  He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed playing cards.

Surviving him are three children: James  (Rosemary) Mammarella, Jean M. Jones, and Eric (Cindy) Mammarella; 9 grandchildren, Andrew, Albert and Daniel Jones; Nikki, Steven and Dominic Mammarella; and Sarah Voegtle, Deidre Westley and Phillip Ranck; 11 great grandchildren; and two sisters, Lena DiOttavio and Yolanda Walus.  He was preceded in death by brothers William, Nicholas, Joseph and Jerry and sisters Inez, Ida, Eleanor and Alba.

The family would like to sincerely thank the staff of the Home Based Primary Care at the Coatesville Veterans' Hospital, Anne from Relative Care, and Brianna, Lisa, Don, Christina and entire staff at Willow Tree Hospice for their care, dedication and support of our father.
