Janet Kirk Obituary

Janet H. Kirk, 97, of Coatesville died Tuesday, January 18, 2022 at The Inn @ Freedom Village.

Born in Thorndale on April 19, 1924, she was the daughter of the late George B. and Ethel Murray Hibberd.

Janet was the wife of Henry Wells, who preceded her in death in 1970 and Jesse H. Kirk, who died in 1993.

After graduating in 1942 from Coatesville High School, Janet worked as a ward clerk for the Coatesville Hospital and then as a Benefits clerk for Lukens Steel Company. She lived on Hazelwood Avenue in Thorndale until 1958; then moved to Winding Lane in Coatesville from 1958 – 1999 in the home she designed and helped build with her husband, Henry Wells and her final move was to Freedom Village in 1999 as one of the first residents in this community.

Janet was a long-time congregant of Olivet United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher.  Additionally, she was the membership administrator for the Chester Valley Swimming and Tennis Club; past officer of Caln Civic Club; and a volunteer at the Brandywine Hospital.  Janet was a member of the Federated Women’s Clubs of America, Coatesville Athletic Association, Coatesville Area Senior Center, Coatesville Country Club and the Thorndale Fire Company.

She loved to play cards and was a member of the same card club for nearly 50 years; loved music especially hymns and listening to Tom Williams sing them; and a lover of nature, sunsets and jigsaw puzzles as well as tending her flower garden where she raised prize winning iris.  She was a voracious reader with a curious mind.  She traveled throughout the US including Hawaii and Alaska, to Spain and the Bahamas.  Most of all, she loved being a wife and mother; always proud of the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren.

Surviving her are her daughters, Carol Balcavage, wife of Robert M. Balcavage of Laurel, DE; and Cathy Psaros, wife of Harry Psaros of Braintree, MA.  Grandchildren, Colonel (Ret) R. Mark Balcavage, Jr. and wife, Kimberly; Dr. Eric Balcavage and wife Kelly; Jill First and husband Steven and Kevin P. Wells.  Step-Grandchildren, Dr. Christina Psaros and husband Paul Fogel and Melissa Psaros.  Great Grandchildren, Conor, Evan and Kira Balcavage; Jared and Kaleigh Balcavage; Ethan and Jackson First; and Estelle, Gabriel and Thalia Fogel.  She was preceded in death by a son, Robert H. Wells in 2015; two brothers, George and Thomas Hibberd and a sister, Ethel MacDowell.
